What Women Say About Men's Grooming

There's a world of different tastes and preferences regarding a man's grooming routine. However, there are some universal truths.

1. Hands: Women like clean trim fingernails. Personally, I don't prefer a man who gets manicures; however, long, unkempt, or tormented fingernails and rough, scratchy, gnawed cuticles are just plain unattractive. We really don't want you to have baby smooth skin or wax your knuckles-you are a man, after all-but it's nice to see that you've got the basics under control here.

2. Feet: What applies to fingernails goes triple for toenails. Watch for nail health here-preventing and treating fungus is critical! It's difficult to think of a bigger turn-off than long, yellow toenails. Being sliced on the Achilles tendon by a saber-toenail is grounds for separation, in my opinion.

3. Hair: Long hair, short hair, no hair-there are a LOT of options here. Whatever style you're sporting, make sure it's clean and tidy. A baseball cap doesn't REALLY hide the fact that you didn't shower, and neither do a ponytail or a comb-over. Greasy hair is greasy hair-no matter how you part it.

4. Bodily Hair: Again, there are a LOT of possibilities in this-er-area. Plenty of men have smooth legs, arms, or chests; if this is you-fear not! A lot of women go for this look, and there are a ton of men that work at achieving it. On the other hand, if you think you can trace your family tree back to Sasquatch, then you should feel great about that too-chest hair is uber-manly. So, there's a good chance that you're perfectly fine just the way you are, but I might watch out for stray patchy spots.

Pay attention to feeble, stringy areas growing on the backs of arms or on the chest. You wouldn't ignore poorly-performing areas of facial hair-consider paying the same attention to other spots. All I'm going to say about back hair is that women like men to have hairy backs about as much as men like women to have hairy legs.

5. The Scent of a Man: One of the most adorable men I ever knew smelled only of clean laundry-it's hard to go wrong with that. Contrarily, I had a High School Math teacher who used large amounts of cologne that reminded me of Novocain-I was always afraid my mouth might start going numb. The bottom line here-any fragrance you use should be pleasant and inconspicuous. This should be a subtle whiff; you must, at all costs, avoid leaving an odor wake (think "Pepe Le Pew"). Leave a woman curious and wanting more, rather than sending her running for fresh air. (I think this philosophy can be applied to many aspects of courtship!)
